4th Grade Pioneer Day

After learning about the Oregon Trail, Greenwood Fourth Graders tried out some pioneer activities at a special Pioneer Day on June 1st. Held at Riverside Park and organized by the school’s fourth grade teachers, the event included churning butter, writing with ink made from berries, pioneer games, making tin lanterns and quilt squares and more.

Teachers and students were encouraged to dress like pioneers for the day and many sported bonnets, calico dresses, aprons and wide brimmed hats.

Fourth grader Peyton said her class learned about how hard the Oregon Trail was because of sickness and injuries. At Pioneer Day, she really liked playing marbles because she hadn’t done it before.

Lucas, another fourth grader, said he enjoyed churning the butter. “I liked learning about the pioneers, it was hard back then but it was fun today.”

Taunya Barnett, Title 1 Teacher at Greenwood, was helping at the station where students could punch out designs on tin cans to make lanterns. She said they all learned that using proper tools matters and “this activity really showed students how to use perseverance and muscle and that pioneers did not waste stuff!”
